Automatic reserve switching systems

Description

The purpose of the automatic reserve switching (ATS) is to switch the basic power supply to the standby power supply in the event of a loss or excessive reduction of the voltage in the primary power path, with simultaneous full efficiency of the back-up power supply devices. ATS automation is aimed at improving the reliability of electricity supply.
The operation of the ATS system is necessary after eliminating the damaged power source (transformer, line). In order for the ATS system to fulfill its task, the source of reserve power should be characterized by sufficient reserve of power, ensuring correct operation of emergency connected receivers (including, for example, self-starting of engines). In the case when the back-up power line is not able to take over the total load, the ATS system must be additionally equipped with an unloading automatics, which will disable less important loads. ATS automation can be solved in various ways, depending on the operating conditions of the equipment and the switchgear diagram. Generally, however, we distinguish two basic ways of reserving supply lines: public reserve and hidden reserve.
We also distinguish two ways to stimulate ATS automation: a full and accelerated operating cycle.
The public reserve - the reserve power supply line in the normal operating system does not carry any load, however it can be switched on in order to take over the total load.
Hidden reserve - power sources are not fully loaded during normal operation and may be temporarily overloaded as a result of switching the entire load to one source.
